Inspired by the orchestral „sound“ and the many possibilities of the instrument, the four musicians decided to intensify this occasional interaction and founded “EXTRACELLO” in 2004.
The originally small repertoire was enriched with commissioned works, mainly in the fields of “cross-over” and jazz, as well as original compositions, arrangements and improvisations. So their program spectrum ranges from Renaissance to Classical to Jazz, Pop and Rock.
EDDA BREIT:
Edda Breit was born in Mödling, Vienna (Austria) and studied cello (Graz,Detmold) and piano(Vienna). Since 1989 she has been a member of the “Vienna Chamber Orchestra”. As a free member she is involved in major orchestras and ensembles like the “Ensemble Modern” in Frankfurt, the “Vienna Nonett” and the “Vienna Quintett”.
She also works as a Baroque cellist for the “Concetus Musicus” the “L’Orfeo” in Linz and the “Haydn Academy” in Eisenstadt. Edda Breit is the Co-founder of the “Vienna masks and musical theatre”, where she worked as musician, actress and mask player.
MELISSA COLEMAN:
Melissa Coleman was born in Melbourne in 1968. At the age of seven she started piano lessons. She studied cello and performing art at the “Victorian College of the Arts” in Melbourne. 1989 she was the winner of the Herbert N. Davis Chamber Music Award and 1998 she won the Hepzibah Menuhin Award for String Soloists at the Musical Society of Victoria. In 1990 Melissa moved to London and visited the private master class with Mischa Maisky, Mark Dobrinsk and William Pleeth.
Since 1992 Melissa Coleman has lived in Vienna. She has performed and toured as a soloist in various chamber music groups and ensembles in prestigious classical, avant-garde, jazz and music festivals worldwide. She has worked with music concepts, as composer, arranger and experimental improviser with individual artists, modern dance, theatre productions and various multi-medial projects.
MARGARETHE DEPPE:
Margarethe Deppe was born in Traunstein, Germany and studied cello in Salzburg and Vienna. She lives and works in Vienna. Margarethe is a free member of various ensembles with different priorities. Classic and original performance practice: “Vienna Academy”, “Ensemble Prisma”; contemporary music: “Klangforum”; ensemble for contemporary and improvised music: “Capella con Durezza”.
She is responsible for the sound design for the theatre group “portrait theater” and collaborates with poets and writers like Linde Prelog, Elfriede Gerstl, Heinz Janisch, Bodo Hell and Gerd Jonke.
GUDULA URBAN:
She was born in Vienna, Austria and studied cello in Vienna, Salzburg and Baltimore/USA. She is a member of the Piano Trio “Trio Vivo Wien”. She works as an orchestra musician in the “Vienna Volksoper”, the “Camerata Salzburg” the “Vienna Chamber Orchestra” and the “Vienna Chamber Philharmonic” Gudula has an active concert career in popular scene as a singer and cellist. (Performances with Ines Reiger, Caroline Koczan, Jonni Madden and Andi Cutic) In the United States she is a Member of the gospel group “Seven” (with performances in Baltimore, New York and Kanada) and in 2004 she published her debut-album as singer and composer ,,Smile on my Face” .
